ARA News • It is not all about buildings, in what other ways can we support the fight against climate change, and do we fully understand the problem? How have organisations adjusted management policies as part of their response? • The carbon footprint of digital activity, not just preservation / storage but every single digital engagement from an email or tweet to an upload or download, is now being better understood. How is our sector responding, do we fully understand the challenges? • What are the benefits of working to tackle climate crisis for our relationships with our users? How can we help the wider public to use our knowledge and the records we care for to care for the local, national and international environment? From individual tree preservation cases to long term understanding of climate data derived from archival records, where are the best places to engage with users on these challenging but critically important topics? • We know good records management helps us overcome environmental challenges on a micro-level, from dealing with asbestos to tackling pollution. What are the learnings to be shared from this and other sector work, what more do we still need to do? • Sustainability of our work and our sector is also a massive issue for us. Repeated short term contracts based on short term funding can be a major challenge magazine for services and professionals, and also impact our attempts to diversify and broaden access to the recordkeeping workforce. How have organisations tackled this problem, what can we do and learn together to avoid funding and workforce crises? What other related issues should we make sure we consider head on, and seek to overcome? Are we on top of the sustainability of what has previously been looked on as ‘project’ work, from digitisation to outreach? Should we be scared of AI entering our sector, or welcome it? These questions are only suggestive of potential areas that could be included, but the programme is really shaped by you! What would you like to say at #ARA2024? The submissions system will open on 13 November 2023 and close on Wednesday 10 January 2024. Notification of invitations to speak are expected to be issued from the week beginning 26 February 2024. The programme will be published shortly after that date and conference registration will open in March 2024. Our venue for 2024 will be the centrally located Birmingham Conference and Events Centre (BCEC). Accommodation is provided in the Holiday Inn which is physically linked to the conference centre. Both are in walking distance of Birmingham New Street station and the main city centre shopping districts. You can find out more about our 2024 conference Call for Papers here. A new deal for the Archives Card The Archives Card is now a tried and tested way to manage access to your archives. Forty-seven archives are already signed up and reaping the benefits in terms of data gathering and security and we are now able to offer the card without a sign-up fee, meaning it could cost less than £1 a day for single site archive services. We have also enhanced the reporting features meaning you get even more from your subscription. The Archives Card has many organisational benefits but critically it makes it much easier for people to access your services, removing both real and perceived barriers and encouraging a wider range of people to come through your doors. You can find out more about the Archives Card here. Or enquire about joining the scheme today by emailing: archivescard@archives.org.uk 13 |
