Berkshire Record
Office becomes the
Berkshire Royal
Archives
The Berkshire Record Office
celebrated its 75th anniversary
on 10 August 2023. In the past,
we celebrated our 60th and 70th
anniversaries with ample cake, so it
seemed only fitting to do the same
for our 75th! Except that this time
there was a slight difference as we
also celebrated the fact that our
name changed as well.
As part of our 75th celebrations, we
applied to the Cabinet Office for a
Royal title as Berkshire is England's
only Royal County and we thought
it would be a nice tribute to the
service after 75 years. We are pleased
to say that we were successful and
so our new name is now the Royal
Berkshire Archives.
It is a prestigious thing to be
allowed to bear a Royal title and
we are very proud of our new
name. We will continue to collect,
care for, share and promote the
rich archival heritage of the Royal
County as a joint service of the six
Berkshire councils, Bracknell Forest,
Reading, Slough, West Berkshire,
the Royal Borough of Windsor and
Maidenhead, and Wokingham.
And we will strive to remember,
celebrate and appreciate the things
that make Berkshire special.

volunteering
project update
The following is an update on the
progress of our digital archives
volunteering project, funded by
the National Lottery Heritage Fund
and run jointly by Gwent Archives
, Glamorgan Archives , and Cardiff
University Special Collections &
Archives.
Our digital platform was launched
in February, and our impressive
community of local, national, and
international volunteers has been
feverishly working through the
content uploaded by the three
partner institutions. They have
completed two transcription
collections, just under 500 letters
from the Edward Thomas Literary
Archive, and nine wartime diaries
of Spanish Civil War and WWII
volunteer nurse, Priscilla Scott-Ellis.
Until more transcription content is
added, they are working on tagging
and describing two photographic
collections. The first is the Cardiff
Dockland Community collection
of portraits taken in the Tiger Bay
area between 1900-1920. The second
